Heating System Summer Maintenance: 4 Tips For Your Home

Keeping your furnace working right is probably not the first thing on your mind as we inch closer to July, but with the world as unpredictable as it is these days, it’s probably a good idea to stay on top of all things related to your home comfort.
Summer Furnace To-Do List
Here are four tips for maintaining your heating system this summer so your furnace can hit the ground running once summer 2020 gives way to fall.
- Check your filters – Checking your furnace air filters is something you should do throughout the year, including during the summer months (especially if your furnace and air conditioning systems share the same filter). If your filters are washable, give them a good cleaning; if they are disposable, install new ones. HVAC air filters keep dirt, dust, and debris out of your living space and away from your furnace, keeping efficiency high, air quality optimal and heating repairs at bay.
- Test your thermostat – An inaccurate thermostat can cost you money and comfort, so be sure to check it at least once (preferably twice) every year (including summer). If you have a zoned heating system that includes multiple thermostats, test each one separately. If your thermostat isn’t working correctly, it’s better to solve the problem now than in the fall or winter.
- Clear your furnace drain – A furnace is typically installed above a drainage hole or sink, where excess moisture accumulates to prevent build-up in your system (too much moisture can damage electronic and other sensitive components). Summer is a good time to check the drainage hole for clogs, particularly if you have a system that both heats and cools your home.
- Do a deep cleaning – Summer is the perfect time to dig deep using a vacuum, rags, a brush, soap, and other household cleaners to get into all the cracks and crevices of your heating equipment. Very dirty vents may need to be taken out of the heater unit, disassembled, and then soaked in warm water and soap to dislodge grime and grit.
