6 Home Heating Energy Efficiency Tips

6 Home Heating Energy Efficiency Tips

Stay comfortable and use less heating oil!

home heating Nutley, NJ With the arrival of winter, home heating systems in Nutley and throughout northern New Jersey are running most of the day and night. While home heating oil can generate a lot of heat and comfort for Garden State households, no one likes the increased energy spending that comes with winter.

The JW Pierson Co. can help you lower your heating costs with these six energy efficiency tips.

1. Hold on to the hot air.

No matter how efficient your boiler or furnace is, you will be spending too much to heat your home if warm air is escaping through your windows, doorframes and wall seams. You can seal up air leaks with weatherstripping, door sweeps and caulk. This will keep your hot air inside and cold air outside.

2. Use sunlight to your advantage.

When there’s a sunny, cloud-free day outside, you can enjoy some free home heating. Open up your blinds, curtains and drapes and let the sunshine in. While you’re at it, trim away any branches that might be blocking the sun. You won’t need to run your heating equipment as often.

3. Check your furnace air filter.

If you have a forced-air heating system with a furnace, you should check its air filter at least once a month during the peak heating season. You can typically find this filter on the side of the furnace or sometimes in the return register/vent. Dirty filters can obstruct airflow, making your HVAC equipment work harder and burn more heating oil. If the filter is dirty, either clean it (if it’s reusable) or replace it.

4. Get smart with your thermostat settings.

There’s a lot of expensive heating equipment in a New Jersey home, but one of the most important parts of your heating system is relatively inexpensive: your thermostat. And how you use your thermostat can make a huge difference in how much you’re spending on heating oil.

The U.S. Department of Energy advises that homeowners can save up to 10% a year on heating and cooling costs by turning their thermostat back 7°-10°F for 8 hours a day. With a programmable thermostat, you can arrange these adjustments for when your family is asleep or out of the house.

You can even invest in a smart thermostat like the Honeywell RedLINK Wireless Comfort products we sell. These state-of-the-art devices make energy-saving temperature adjustments when you’re out of the house — or when energy rates are higher!

5. Reverse your fans.

Did you know that you can change the direction of your ceiling fans with a switch? It’s true, and doing so can lower your heating bills in the winter. When your fan blades run clockwise in the cooler months, they distribute warm air lower in your room. This makes the room feel warm and can lower your furnace and boiler usage.

6. Arrange an annual home heating tune-up.

Yearly heating maintenance makes a world of difference for your furnace or boiler’s energy efficiency and dependability. A tune-up will decrease your heating oil usage. It also reduces the chance of a winter system breakdown and extends your equipment’s service life.
